Reading Scouts salvage festival camping gear for sale

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

image79th Reading Scouts are working in partnership with Festival Republic, the organisers of Reading Festival, and Bright Green, a community recycling project, to ensure that the thousands of items of camping equipment left behind by festival goers at this year’s Reading Festival are cleared away and put to good use.
Taking place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, Reading Festival has a capacity of 80,000 and is to be headlined by Radiohead, Artic Monkeys and Kings Of Leon.
Every year after Reading Festival, thousands of items of camping equipment are left behind by festival goers. 79th Reading Scouts are one of the largest Scout Groups in the South of England. They have been at the forefront of the recycling effort at Reading for a number of years.
79th Reading Scouts will be responsible for helping to clear the festival site, reclaiming usable equipment which is in good condition and redistributing the equipment at a very low cost to community groups.

Experience the outdoors through Scouting

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

unsorted Over the next few days, The Scout Association will be at the Outdoors Show promoting the many opportunities available through volunteering for Scouting.
Dan Beacon of the Scouts explains, ‘A show like this is a great opportunity for talking to people with the kind of skills that are typical of great Scouting. We can start conversations with people who can potentially become skills instructors in activities such as kayaking, climbing, orienteering and much more.
‘Many people don’t realise how flexible volunteering for Scouting can be. Even if someone only has a few hours a month there are opportunities for them to get involved and get something out of Scouting.’

Scouts assist in emergency Snowdon rescue

Friday, May 15th, 2009

news_140409 Scouts aged 13 and 14 have been commended by Mountain Rescue teams for their handling of an emergency situation during an expedition in Snowdonia.
The Scouts, who are all Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders in the 1st Midsomer Norton Scout Group, encountered a group of hypothermic walkers who had collapsed during a DofE expedition in the mountainous terrain. Along with their leaders, they erected temporary shelters to keep the casualties warm and waited with them until the Mountain Rescue Team arrived. Leaders Adrian Miles and Scott Whittaker gave emergency aid on the scene. Weather conditions prevented the rescue helicopter from landing, so the Scouts assisted rescuers by carrying the casualties down the mountain on stretchers.

This month brings new life to ScoutHelp Image:Emotic_teeth.png With no activity for 4 months we have kick it into gear, with a new theme which has been fully tested, new content and features on the way and a lot more search engine optimization from zubmit.org.uk

New theme now live Image:Emotic_teeth.png – We have a new theme in which is here to make the site more lively and friendly for younger scouters while still looking professional for the young at heart ones.

If you have any comments about it please leave them at Comments

If you prefer the old theme sign up, login and go-to my preferences at the top of the page and set the skin to monobook.

This month we have also started the quiz project. This will provide some simple quizzes for Scout groups to get members to do at home online or that could be printed off and handed out at a Hut evening. Of course you could always do it yourself to test your knowledge… If you have any comments about this or a quiz you would like to see please speak up Image:Emotic_regular.png

We also have a new partner in crime which is providing us with theme help and some programing help Spread-Spiceworks – You wont see them mentioned much they just want a link placed, we should be getting one back though… fingers crossed.

Hopefully this time we can keep the momentum going.
