Geneva, January 14th 2010 – After the violent quake which struck Haiti, World Scouting is mobilising in order to help the 30,000 Scouts of Haïti so that they can come to the aid of the stricken population. In the name of World Scouting, a message of solidarity and compassion, was sent to Haitian Scouts, even though it is very difficult to get into contact with them for the moment. A volunteer cooperation specialist from “Scouts et Guides de France” (Scouts and Guides of France) is on site in Port-aux-Princes, to support the coordination of the international Scout aid.

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010The news coming out of Haiti is very grave. So many citizens are missing or are in need of immediate care. “Our hearts and prayers go out to those suffering at this very difficult time,” said BSA International Commissioner Jim Turley.
There is one small beacon of hope. World Scouting has been in contact with a member of the Scouts and Guides of France who happened to be in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during this horrific earthquake. “This Scouter reports that our brother and sister Scouts are helping in the relief effort. Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Scouts have been advised not to carry penknives unless there is a “specific” reason to do so.
The guidance, published in Scouting magazine, follows confusion over laws on carrying a knife in public and a crackdown on knife culture.
Dave Budd, who runs safety courses for scouts, said knives “of any sort” should not be carried to camps unless there was a “specific need”.
But Kent scout leader Sheila Burgin said it was health and safety gone mad.
